الْمُحْصِي
Al-Muhsi
The Accounter
What Al-Muhsi Means
Al-Muhsi is from the root h-s-y, to count completely and encompass by number. Allah is Al-Muhsi, the Accounter: every created thing, every person and every deed is within His precise count — nothing is estimated, approximated or forgotten. Honesty requires noting that the Quran establishes this name through its verbs rather than the noun: of mankind it says, “He has counted them (ahsahum) and numbered them with [full] numbering” (19:94); of all existence, “He has counted everything by number (ahsa kulla shay’in adada)” (72:28); and the record is written: “Everything We have enumerated in a Book” (78:29). For the believer this name is sobering and settling at once: sobering, because the count of your own deeds is exact; settling, because no tear, no hidden charity and no patient moment fell outside the count of Al-Muhsi.
Al-Muhsi in the Quran
لَّقَدْ أَحْصَىٰهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
“He has fully encompassed them and precisely calculated their numbers,”
لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا
“so that He knows that they (angels) have conveyed the messages of their Lord. And He has encompassed all that is with them, and has comprehensive knowledge of every thing by numbers.”
وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا
“And everything (from their deeds) is thoroughly recorded by Us in writing.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Muhsi — for example, in your own words: “Ya Muhsi, nothing of my life escapes Your count; let what You recorded of me be a record I am not ashamed to meet.” The practical lesson is to live as one whose ledger is real: before the deed, remember it will be counted (19:94); after a hidden good deed, rest — it is already counted by the One whose count never drops an entry.
