Al-Mumin
The Giver of Faith
What Al-Mumin Means
Al-Mu’min is built on the root a-m-n, from which come both iman (faith) and amn (safety and security). Scholars explain the name with these joined senses: Allah is the One who grants faith to His servants, putting belief in their hearts, and He is the One who grants safety — sheltering His creation from fear and from being wronged. He is also true to His word: what He promises, He fulfils, so His servants can rely on Him completely. In the verse the name stands between As-Salam and Al-Muhaymin (59:23) — safety, then the granting of faith and security, then watchful guardianship. For a believer this name answers two deep needs at once. The faith he holds is not his own achievement but a gift from Al-Mu’min, and the security he longs for — in this world and from the terrors of the next — is given by the same Lord who never breaks a promise.
Al-Mumin in the Quran
“He is Allah, besides whom there is no god, the Sovereign, the Supreme-In-Holiness, the Safe (from all defects), the Giver-Of-Peace, the Guardian, the All-Mighty, the All-Repairer, the Sublime. Pure is Allah from what they associate with Him.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may call Him ‘Ya Mu’min — O Giver of Faith, O Giver of Safety’ in your own words, for example asking Him to make your faith firm and to keep you and your family safe from every fear. The lesson is to ask for both gifts from their only Giver: when faith feels weak, ask Al-Mu’min to renew it; when you feel afraid, ask Him for the security that He alone truly grants.
