Al-Kabir
The Most Great
What Al-Kabir Means
Al-Kabir comes from the root kaf-ba-ra: greatness, grandeur, and seniority beyond all comparison. Everything besides Allah that is called great is small next to Him; His greatness is not measured against rivals, because ‘Knower of the unseen and the seen’ is ‘Al-Kabir, Al-Muta’al’ (13:9) — the Most Great, exalted above all. On the Day when hearts are terrified, no intercession will benefit except for whom He permits, and the angels themselves will say: ‘He is Al-Aliyy, Al-Kabir’ (34:23). The Prophet ﷺ reported Allah’s own words: grandeur (al-kibriya’) is His cloak — whoever tries to wrest it from Him is punished. Human greatness is borrowed, brief, and contested; His is essential and eternal. For the believer, this name is lived every time he says Allahu Akbar: Allah is greater — greater than the fear, the enemy, the debt, the disease, and the desire standing in front of him right now.
Al-Kabir in the Quran
“He is the Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is the Great, the High.”
“Intercession before Him is of no benefit, but for the one whom He has permitted. (And those who receive a command from Allah remain fearful) until when fear is removed from their hearts, they say (to each other), “What did your Lord say?” They say, “The Truth.” He is the High, the Great.”
“That is because Allah is the only Real One and what they invoke other than Him is false and Allah is the High, the Great.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Abu Sa’id Khudri and Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: Glory is His lower garment and Majesty is His cloak and (Allah says, ) He who contends with Me in regard to them I shall torment him.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may say, in your own words: ‘Ya Kabir — O Most Great — You are greater than everything that frightens or tempts me; be greater in my heart than all of it.’ The lesson is the meaning of the takbir we repeat all day: problems shrink to their true size when measured against Al-Kabir. Say Allahu Akbar not as a habit of the tongue but as a judgment of the heart, and act on it.
