Al-Hakim
The All-Wise
What Al-Hakim Means
Al-Hakim is from the root h-k-m, which carries judgment, firmness and putting things exactly where they belong. Allah is Al-Hakim, the All-Wise: every decree of His, every command and every prohibition, is placed with perfect wisdom, even when our limited sight cannot trace it. The angels themselves confessed it: “You are the All-Knowing, Al-Hakim” (2:32). He shapes each child in the womb as He wills — and the verse closes with His might and wisdom: “Al-Aziz, Al-Hakim” (3:6), reminding us that even our own form was chosen wisely, not randomly. All praise belongs to Him in this world and the next, “and He is Al-Hakim, Al-Khabir” (34:1). For the believer, this name produces contentment: what reaches you was not a mistake, and what passed you by was not an oversight.
Al-Hakim in the Quran
“They said, “To You belongs all purity! We have no knowledge except what You have given us. Surely, You alone are the All-knowing, All-wise.””
“He is the One Who shapes you in the wombs as He likes. There is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.”
“Praise be to Allah, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth; and for Him is the praise in the Hereafter, and He is the Wise, the All-Aware.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Hakim — for example, in your own words: “Ya Hakim, Your wisdom surrounds what I cannot understand; grant me a heart that trusts Your decree, and open for me the wisdom in what You have chosen for me.” The practical lesson is to stop demanding that every event explain itself: the angels acknowledged His wisdom before they understood (2:32); so does the believer who says, ‘I am content with Allah as my Lord.’
