The Guide

What Al-Hadi Means

Al-Hadi is the Guide: the One who directs every creature to what it needs and directs the believers to the straight path. The Quran gives the name in two reassuring settings. To the Prophet (peace be upon him), opposed by enemies in every generation, Allah says: ‘Your Lord suffices as a Guide and a Helper’ (25:31). And of the believers He promises, ‘Allah is surely the Guide of those who believe, to a straight path’ (22:54). Guidance here is not information alone; it is Allah opening a heart to the truth and steadying it on the path. For the believer, Al-Hadi is the name for every crossroads: the career, the marriage, the doubt. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked for this guidance even over his own character, praying, ‘Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to it except You’ (Sahih Muslim 771) — if he needed to ask, we need to ask far more.

Al-Hadi in the Quran

“and so that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (i.e. the revelation recited by the prophet) is the truth from your Lord, and they may believe in it and their hearts may become humble towards it. Allah is the Guide of the believers to the straight path.”

“In a similar way We made for every prophet an enemy from among the sinners, but your Lord suffices as a guide and as a supporter.”

What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us

THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES

“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”

“‘Ali b. Abu Talib reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up at night for prayer he would say: I turn my face in complete devotion to One Who is the Originator of the heaven and the earth and I am not of the polytheists.”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Take the Prophet’s own words for this name into your night prayer: ‘Wa-hdini li-ahsani al-akhlaq, la yahdi li-ahsaniha illa Ant — guide me to the best of character, for none guides to it except You’ (Sahih Muslim 771). And in your own words: ‘Ya Hadi, guide me in this decision as You guided those who believed before me.’ Ask Al-Hadi before you ask people: in istikhara, in doubt, in raising children. Its lesson is humility: guidance is a gift requested daily, not a possession claimed once.
