Al-Basir

Name 27 of 99

Al-Basir

The All-Seeing

What Al-Basir Means

Al-Basir comes from the root ba-sad-ra: sight and insight. Allah sees all things — what is in the open and what is hidden, what is in the darkness of the night and what is inside the chests — without His sight being limited by light, distance, or cover. The command to return trusts and judge with justice ends with the reminder that He is ‘Sami’an Basiran’ (4:58): He sees exactly how we handle what is placed in our care. Even the birds in the sky are held up under His sight (67:19). For the believer, this name is the root of ihsan, the highest level of worship the Prophet ﷺ described: to worship Allah as though you see Him, knowing that even though you do not see Him, He sees you. A deed done where no eye watches is still done before Al-Basir.

Al-Basir in the Quran

“Glorious is He Who made his servant travel by night from Al-Masjid-ul-Harām to Al-Masjid-ul-AqSā whose environs We have blessed, so that We let him see some of Our signs. Surely, He is the All-Hearing, the All- Seeing.”

“Surely, Allah commands you to deliver trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between people, judge with justice. Surely, excellent is the exhortation Allah gives you. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”

“Have they not looked to the birds above them spreading their wings, and (at times) they fold (them) in? No one holds them up except the RaHmān (the All-Merciful Allah). Surely He is watchful of every thing.”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may say, in your own words: ‘Ya Basir — O All-Seeing — You see my state and my need; look to me with Your mercy and set my affairs right.’ The lesson of this name is ihsan: pray, give, and refrain from sin as one who knows he is seen. The gaze of Al-Basir makes private deeds precious and private sins dangerous — nothing is unwitnessed, and no sincere act goes unseen.
