Al-Aziz
The Almighty
What Al-Aziz Means
Al-Aziz is built on the root ‘-z-z, which joins might, honour and invincibility. Allah is the Almighty whom nothing can resist, defeat or diminish; He never needs support, and every strength in creation is borrowed from Him and returns to Him. Yet His might is never reckless: the Quran repeatedly pairs it with wisdom — ‘He is the Almighty, the All-Wise’ (3:6) — and with praise, ‘the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy’ (14:1), teaching that perfect power in Allah is always perfect justice too. When the Prophet ﷺ taught a man suffering pain to seek refuge, he directed him to this very attribute: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s Might and Power’ (Muslim 2202). For a believer this name is a fortress. He does not beg honour from the powerless or fear the threats of the strong; he attaches himself to the Invincible, and he refuses to buy worldly honour at the price of disobeying the One to whom all honour belongs.
Al-Aziz in the Quran
“He is Allah, besides whom there is no god, the Sovereign, the Supreme-In-Holiness, the Safe (from all defects), the Giver-Of-Peace, the Guardian, the All-Mighty, the All-Repairer, the Sublime. Pure is Allah from what they associate with Him.”
“He is the One Who shapes you in the wombs as He likes. There is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.”
“Alif, Lām, Rā. This is a book We have sent down to you, so that you may deliver the people, with the will of their Lord, out of all sorts of darkness into the light, leading them to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Uthman b. Abu al-‘As Al-Thaqafi reported that he made a complaint of pain to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) that he felt in his body at the time he had become Muslim.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may call Him ‘Ya Aziz — O Almighty’ in your own words, for example asking Him for strength against your weaknesses and protection from every oppressor. Copy the Prophet’s ﷺ own instinct: in pain and fear he sought refuge in Allah’s ‘izzah, His might (Muslim 2202). When you feel weakest, that is exactly when to run to the Invincible.
